Out with the old... in with the new

Sports editor Krystal Deyo hands off her role to the next generation.

M’s show signs of a worn-down bullpen

The Mariners have been on an offensive splurge the past week, which has helped their pitching retain a lead toward the end of a game. But there is still much work needed for this team to win; specifically, they must play better. For their next few series, the Mariners are facing division rivals and teams with a .

Countdown to South African World Cup

For one month, every four years, the world watches 32 nations contend for the title of world champion. The FIFA World Cup is the world’s most-watched sporting event. In 2006, it was estimated that the World Cup amassed 260 million viewers, more than two-and-a-half times the viewers of the Super Bowl.

Youth become Eagles at summer sports camps

For five years, Eastern athletic camps have been offering high school students and other youth the opportunity to be under the summer sun while exploring the possibility of becoming future Eagles. These camps feature football, both men and women’s basketball, volleyball and women’s soccer.

Women’s sports prevail in All-Sports Trophy award

The EWU women earned a spot among the top three schools in the Big Sky Conference (BSC) up for the 2009-2010 All-Sports Trophy award. Altogether, the women’s teams earned 75.5 points, just behind the University of Montana and Sacramento State University who earned 76 and 88 points, respectively.

Making her mark

Before an event, most runners have a ritual. Sometimes they pace alongside the track, stretch for the umpteenth time just out of habit, or seclude themselves from their teammates to “get in the zone.”  EWU sophomore, sprinter and jumper Brianna Okoro doesn’t have a ritual.

Volleyball reloads after losing star players

The Lady Eagles and Coach Miles Kydd look to change their strategy from power-hitting front to a defensive threat after losing four key starters from last season’s stellar lineup, including 2009’s Big Sky Conference Player of the Year Hayley Hills.

Aching Mariners slowly fade away

The Mariners are at the start of a “sink or swim” period. Sitting at a 14-24 record, the team must have a .572 winning percentage for the rest of the year to make 85 wins. To win just five more than that, they must win nearly two-thirds of the games left this year.

Eagles prevail at Big Sky Conference Championships

The women’s track and field team made history during the weekend as they traveled to Ogden, Utah, for the Big Sky outdoor conference championships. The women’s team finished with a total of 102 points, which earned them fourth place, the highest they have ever finished.

The Cleveland Cavaliers just found themselves packing once again in the NBA playoffs. People are questioning the organization’s acquisitions. They are wondering if the Cavs can play a lick of defense and are contemplating if LeBron can step it up in clutch time.

New Seahawks to step up in Seattle

A new team will be playing in Seattle next season and with so many off-season changes they are almost unrecognizable. New Head Coach Pete Carroll has changed the culture in Seattle. Since leaving the University of Southern California, he has made an explosive re-entrance into the NFL.

Dave Howard spins in the shot-put ring to get a solid mark at the Oregon Relays.

Second annual EEEWOOS will be bigger and better than the first

As the year winds down, Davin Perry and the athletic department are getting fired up for the award show that all athletes have been waiting for: the EEEWOOS. Using ESPN’s ESPYs awards show as a model, Perry, electronic media coordinator for the athletic department, started the show last year.

Sleepy in Seattle

Ken Griffey Jr. may not be a Mariner for long. The Tacoma News Tribune’s Larry LaRue wrote a blog titled “For Griffey & the Mariners, the end is near.” The facts couldn’t be stated more clearly. While I’ll always be grateful to Griffey for his incredible talent in Seattle, this season has been far from his best performance.

Scholar athletes of the month

Brad Wall: Map it out: what’s a day in your life? I wake up at about 7:30 a.m., I eat breakfast, get ready for school. I have class at 9, 11 and 12, practice at 1 … usually practice for two hours or so, maybe longer. I get back, do some homework, eat some dinner.

Eags football set to stomp in fall

With spring practices coming to an end, EWU’s football team is looking ahead to their first game at  the University of Nevada, Sept. 2. While standouts Matt Nichols and Nathan Overbay are enjoying their chance at stardom in the NFL, the rest of the Eagles are staying focused on the upcoming season.

Lower seeds win across the board in Stanley Cup playoffs

Round one is out of the way in the Stanley Cup playoffs, and it would appear Cinderella has nothing on the Montreal Canadiens. The eighth-seeded Canadiens entered their series as the underdog against the highest scoring team, the first-seeded Washington Capitals.

Six more Eastern Washington track athletes qualify for Big Sky Conference Championships.

Mariners’ hitting struggles continue as season’s first month comes to an end

Following an unbalanced weekend, Mariners’ General Manager Jack Zduriencik has made some smart moves to improve the roster. After Sunday’s game, Manager Don Wakamatsu said, “If anyone had said we would throw 26 scoreless innings in a three-game series and get swept, I’d think you are crazy, but that’s what happened.

Eagle football sees red in upcoming 2010 season

The color of blood isn’t the only reason why EWU football players are excited for the artificial red field turf to be laid down this summer. For years, Woodward Field has seen its fair share of soggy mud games slowing down players and turning the field into a 120-yard Slip-‘N-Slide.

After an incredibly strong homestand, the Mariners struggled to maintain leads in their first look at the Chicago White Sox this season. Now sitting at 10-11, the team had opportunities to win their entire series with the formerly struggling Sox. Two weeks ago, the Mariners had won seven of their last eight games.

Eastern football’s new hot hand

Nobody believed Matt Nichols would fill Erik Meyer’s shoes as EWU quarterback, but those doubters were proven wrong. Nichols is now NFL bound, and his departure leaves a hole at quarterback once again. With five players still competing for the starting job, one candidate seems to have the edge on the rest and the best chance to supplant the Peyton Award winner and conference record breaker — Bo Levi Mitchell.

Lady Eags fall short in trek to the BSCC

After a quick 4-0 start in Big Sky Conference (BSC) play, the EWU women’s tennis team dropped their final four conference matches and missed the BSC tournament by a small margin. “We’re feeling like crap right now. It’s brutal, but the thing is, we went in and it felt like it was a very winnable match for us.

Mariners go on a four-game winning streak

After a dismal during first week of baseball, the Seattle Mariners made a massive rebound in the form of a four game winning streak. Now sitting at 8-7, the Mariners have one of the easiest portions of their season ahead of them. Although two runs decided several of the games in the past week, the team improved as a whole and appears to be headed in the right direction.

EWU women's rugby team displays rugged camaraderie

With most of Eastern’s attention focused on the men’s rugby club, students are overlooking the women’s club, except for the women, of course. With women’s rugby, nicknamed the “Heavenly Banshees,” sitting at an even 3-3 record, they still have the passion and motivation to give it their all.

Pelluer Invite brings 39th home field advantage

The Pelluer Invitational has been “the place to compete” in the past, usually bringing good weather and competition for EWU and visiting athletes. This year, with strong winds, chilling temperatures and nearly bare stadium bleachers, the Eastern Eagles looked past hindrances to find inspiration to put up some marks and distances for the record books.

EWU men’s tennis makes final run

EWU men’s tennis had an up-and-down weekend at home April 9-11, defeating Weber State University 5-2, losing 3-4 against Northern Arizona University (NAU) and winning the match against Seattle University (SU) 5-2. Seattle Mariners have a sluggish start

After nearly a week of baseball, the Seattle Mariners have faced an onslaught of criticism and questions about their performance on all sides of the game. Nine games into the season, the Mariners have only won three, a far different perspective that offseason hype brought for fans.

Holmstedt leads the pack

Tiger Woods may win the award for most interesting golfer of the year, but EWU has its own standout. As the oldest of the girls on the golf team, junior Kellie Holmstedt stands as a different, more personally successful role model than Woods. “I kind of fit the mommy role and make sure everyone has sunscreen, hair ties and are ready to play.

King breaks EWU's 10,000-meter record

To most people, cereal and peanut butter toast is a typical breakfast meal, but to track athlete Kyle King, it’s a necessity to succeed. The meal used to be a prerace ritual for King, who recently broke EWU’s school record in the 10,000 meters, but now he is trying to treat race days like normal days.

Mariner fans believe big

For nearly half a year, baseball in Seattle has been dormant. It’s time for fans to wake up and embrace a new and improved Seattle Mariners team. The offseason has been busy and hugely successful for the team. Often lauded by local critics, moves made by Jack Zduriencik have attracted the attention of the national media.
