Letter to the Editor: Charity opportunities are everywhere

As the familiar sounds of charity bells began to ring outside our local stores this year, we are reminded of the many who are struggling financially. Although we may not be able to drop bills in the charity buckets, we must not forget that there is much we can do for our community.

Letter to the Editor: Unhappy with budget distribution

This week's letter to the editor questions the distribution of the budget

Letters to the Editor for 10/21/09: Smoking and fast food take the stage

Smoking Thanks to the destructive powers of nicotine, my grandmother died a horrible death before I was born.  Because of this, I am adamant about avoiding smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke.  Imagine, therefore, how much I enjoy being forced to walk past inconsiderate smokers on Eastern's campus in order to reach my classes.

Letter to the editor: Professor of economics speaks on wage discrimination

"Women's earnings are 80 percent of men's." This oft-touted statistic is computed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and can be found at http://www.bls.gov/cps/wlf-databook-2008.pdf. In 2007 women had earnings of $614 versus $766 for men. As an example, the list of data used to compute the average weekly earnings could be $354, $354, $1134 for women and $354, $878, $1066 for men. 1 comment

Letter to the Editor: Signposts needed on campus

A few weeks ago, we found ourselves on a lengthy expedition through campus to seek out classrooms for the beginning of the spring quarter. We have experienced this problem on multiple occasions resulting in late arrivals and even missed class days. Luckily, some are nearing the end of this campus pandemonium and now have an idea of where to look for specific buildings.

Letter to the editor: We have a problem here

There is a problem here at EWU. This problem is directed mostly towards the students living in the dorms, but also applies to the town. As a freshman we always had problems getting food after midnight. Some would say that this is not a legitimate problem, but the problem does not apply to those people in the way it does the people in the dorms.

Letter to the Editor: Time for books to go digital

Dear Editor, The costs of school books can be outrageous. With the economy on the downward spiral and tuiton on the rise, professors have the abilty to help lighten the load on their students. This is my third year at Eastern Washington University and rarely have I read from a textbook and used that information to pass a class.

Letter to the Editor

Dear Easterner Editor, This is a picture of a bad situation in front of a house in Cheney where EWU students are living on 4th Street. If you look closely at the picture, there is one car plowed in, with a second car double parked. A Cheney Police officer has been called to ask the owner of the double parked car to move it.

Letter to the Editor: Venezuelan Communist agenda

I believe the latest article on Colombia, featuring Maria Ruth Sanbria propagates a pro-communism agenda, and an anti sentiment toward what is called "Capitalism, and Imperialism." (Which promotes technological developments, and employs diverse involvement in government.

Letter to the Editor: Concerns about Strength and Conditioning Center

Editor, The Easterner As both a taxpayer and as someone who taught at Eastern for nearly 30 years, I am very distressed about some forthcoming plans for change. I have it on good authority that the athletic department plans to take sole possession (perhaps excepting an hour at noon) of the Strength and Conditioning Center (weight room) in the Phase.

Letter to the editor

I'm disappointed in you, "Easterner." Ever heard of fair and balanced? Representing both sides? Upon reading the political half of the opinion page, I became completely disgusted in your representation of "student views and perspectives." Whose views do you suppose you are representing? Based on the opinion page, I would assume everyone at Eastern is a diehard Democrat.

Letter to the editor: Girls are way cooler than World of Warcraft

I don't really like telling people how to run their lives. Unless if what they are doing is life threatening, I tend to stay out of things that are considered "none of my business." However a certain thing concerning six or more boys on my dorm floor has awed me.

Letter to the editor: Article subconsciously shows racism

I was pleased to find an article in The Easterner, "Juneteenth celebrated on 'May'teenth", written by Chris Malmberg, about the Juneteenth celebration held on campus, but once I read the following passage, I immediately felt disturbed: "A tall, athletic, well-dressed man in his early 20s, Russ, didn't look like the type who did much public speaking.

Letter to the editor: Sean Smith helps to bring God to campus

Dear Editor, I am writing in response to the article about Sean Smith's visit on Monday March 8th. It is an overflow of passion that is seen in the photo that accompanied the article about Sean Smith. I walked in that night with so many thoughts and questions.

Letter to the Editor

Dear Opinion Editor, I was appalled at reading the article "EWU police focus too much on underage drinking." I would first off like to remind everyone something that you might not be aware of ... if you are under 21, you are committing a crime by drinking underage.

Letter to the editor

College Republicans seen as racists

Dear Opinion Editor, The April 14 bake sale held by the College Republicans was a huge slap in the face to those of us who support affirmative action and understand the reasons behind why it was implemented. Information cited and distributed from the College Republicans demonstrates their ignorance as it pertains to this issue. 1 comment

Letter to the Editor: Leadership is more than just talk

You recently published an article that criticized President Bush on some of his decisions during his presidency. For example, it bashed Bush on Weapons Of Mass Destruction (WMDs). In the piece, the author stated that “The American public deserves better leadership than this.

Letter to the Editor: Responsibility should be supported

I would like to take this opportunity to comment on the recent advertising insert in The Easterner. First, let me convey that I understand your policy does not limit or prohibit any advertising. I also understand that EWU is not a dry campus. However, I do take issue with advertising targeting EWU students that so blatantly promotes alcohol use with no information regarding any responsibility or safety factors.

Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor, I attended a conference recently. The topic of terrorism was discussed for approximately an hour. I became very uncomfortable with the realities we refuse to recognize in this country. The facts were confirmed by various Department of Homeland Security and Border Patrol members.

Letter to the Editor: Life is a gift

Opinion Editor, It breaks my heart to read that children are seen as half-human. Let me explain myself: Freedom is not a choice, it is a gift from God to each individual. What we do with that freedom is where the choosing comes in. If as a woman I decided it is needed to abort another human (no matter the growth of the fetus), I am denying that life of its freedom.

Letter to the Editor: Learn about alcohol

Dear Campus Community, This week (October 18-23) is National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week, and I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the importance of being aware of the impact alcohol has on many people’s lives and also the importance of reviewing our university-wide alcohol policy.

Letter to the Editor: Save the Commandments

Editor, This is in regards to the article that was published in the Oct. 13 issue of The Easterner, “Thou Shalt Not Whine,” by Rae-Lynn Conger. I found the article to be an exact representation of my feelings as well as a few of my close friends.

Letter to the Editor: Petty theft causes pain

Dear Editor, Something has happened to me recently and to other people here in Cheney that has left me wondering why people would decide to turn something as meaningful as magnetic ribbons on cars that say things such as “Support Our Troops” or “Freedom Isn’t Free” or “God Bless America” into a crime.

Letter to the Editor: Draft inevitable?

Dear Editor: The Military Draft is a critical election issue.  George Bush repeatedly states his intent to spread “Freedom” throughout the Middle East and the world and that tall order cannot be achieved with the all volunteer army. The crucial shortfall in today’s military, in particular the army, is soldiers.

Letter to Sports Editor

Love those basketball slide shows on easterneronline.com, Thanks for the slide show, they are great. The photos are very clear, good action shots are always the best. Thanks again for this web site, we look at all the different sites on it. It keeps us more in touch with Eastern.

Letter to the Editor

The winner of Tuesday's election forum was Rob Paravonian. Unfortuantely, Rob is not an ASEWU candidate. Rob was the guest comedic guitarist who played to a large crowd in the PUB MPR while ate Baldy's on the other side of the building ASEWU held it's election forum for a handful of lunchers.

Letter to the Editor

It's a matter of principle

Dear Editor: I am writing in response to the article published in last week’s issue about the ROTC Blood Drive. The article specified certain qualifications that must be met before a person’s blood can be drawn, but failed to mention the permanent disqualifications of sexual orientation.

Letter to the Editor

Please Allow Us to Clarify...

Dear Editor, Receiving timely inexpensive mental health care is of growing concern in our country and on our campus. It was disturbing to learn that a student in crisis was unable to access the mental health care she needed. What was more disturbing, however, was that a misleading article might prevent other students from seeking the help they need.

Letter to the Editor

He almost turned Ole Betsy into hamburger meat

It could have been a nightmare! Leaving Cheney last night 1\2 hr before dark, I almost swerved off the road when I saw this large Hereford cow step onto the shoulder of the road! I knew if I kept on driving, somebody was going to crash into her. Just think about a 900 lb.

Letters to the Editor: Budget issues require prolonged student effort

While it is notable that the Finance Committee is making amends to Clubs and Orgs with their reserve budget withdraw, it isn't the long-term solution needed, and neither is a new student fee. The ASEWU Finance Committee needs to look for other ways of making budget allocations equitable in the future.

Letters to the editor: Student comments on Mixon incident

I appreciate the fact the school paper was willing to cover the story on the alleged violence that some athletes are under investigation for. I thought it was important on one hand not to allow political correctness to prevent us, the students, from being able to acknowledge serious challenges we have as a nation.

Letters to the editor: Greeks power not representative of population

Dear Editor, Our student body is no longer governed by a functioning democracy. Our voter turnout percentages is lucky to break into the double digits. Literally. We have roughly 10,000 students eligible to vote and we cast fewer than 1,000 ballots last spring.

Letters to the Editor

Dear Easterner, I am responding to a claim made by Mr. Alex Keane in his Nov 22 article entitled 'Fear the Republicans.' While I respect Mr. Keane's right to believe whatever he wishes, I request that he retract a statement that he made in error.

Letters to the Editor

To the Editor, I write in response to the Opinion piece “No Moore lies” from last week’s edition of The Easterner. Perhaps what is most troubling about “No Moore lies” is its appeal to the moral high ground to justify its willing suspension of curiosity.

Letters to the Editor

The Concert Advisory Committee (CAC) is open to all EWU students, staff and faculty interested in planning small and large performers. One such event was the Ying Yang Twins concert. We believe we didn’t receive full support from university representatives.

Letters to the Editor: A Fine Feathered Nest

Dear Mr. Sports Editor Troy Kirby, I am writing in response to your opinion article for the December Easterner Issue titled: "It is time for EWU to leave the Cheney nest." I hereby offer the following explanation. Your complaint was about receiving a $25 ticket for leaving your car parked on a public street during the city's snow removal process.

Letters to the Editor

Three letters in this week

Eastern should make the change to smoke-free Dear Editor, There have been many times at Eastern Washington where I have run into a cloud of cigarette smoke without even realizing it. Once you are caught behind someone smoking while walking on campus, there is no way to get away from it.

Letter to the Editor: It's time to abandon the status quo for 2008 election

Too much was wrong with David Kyle Lindsay's article, "Mediocre but Still Mine" in the April 9 issue of The Easterner to confine the response to the comment section of the Easterner Online, hence this response. Let me first state David is an accomplished writer and editor and this is not a critique of him personally but of an often repeated conservative motto, "Stay the course no matter how bad it sucks.

Letter to the editor: HAL responds to Republican alumnus criticism

In the Nov. 7, 2007 issue of The Easterner, Adam Ramsey levels some serious charges against the thoughtful members of the Humanist Action League. As their faculty adviser, I may be biased in their favor, but I believe that his charges need to be addressed.

Letter to the editor: Managing editor Brandon Hansen is a snip

Hello Eastern Eagles, Too bad you have a pathetic little snip that made his way to Easterner Managing Editor status. I never blog - so I am not sure what group of Griz Fans talk about Bobby Hauck's hair cut - have never heard of it discussed in Missoula - perhaps Mr.

Letter to the Editor

A wall around the U.S. isn't a real solution

This letter is in response to the article, "Illegal immigration issue too easy to fix" in the April 16 edition of The Easterner. In response to James Eik's article, while there is a lot to take pride in the development of this country there are also many shameful events that contributed to this development such as slavery, the removal of Native Americans and the oppression of minorities throughout American history.

Letters to the editor

Sincerely frustrated with the Math

I have been struggling to meet my math requirements. It angers me to struggle so hard to meet requirements, but that anger is made worse by the knowledge that I am not alone in this struggle. Something is amiss in the math department. I have heard that 50 to 75 percent of students do not pass 103, 104 or 115 on the first try.

Letters to the editor

Regarding the Hawaiian Language

I would like to comment about the article that was featured in the school newspaper about Hawaiian language classes.  First of all, it gave the impression that this is a class provided by Eastern— “which is why Eastern is proud to offer this class once a week.

Letters to the editor

THREE CHEERS for Diane Curtiss and her article, "Manners at Eastern Need to be revised."

I’ve worked on campus 18 years and, during this time, I’ve seen the same thing.  The majority of the students on this campus are great.  I love the atmosphere of the college campus but a few can spoil it for all.  If I was a professor and a cell phone went off in my class, I’d point to the door.

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

I just wanted to comment of the article you had last week about Greek houses going dry. It stated the alcohol policy of each house, and said, "Pi Lambda Phi still allows alcohol." I don't know where the reporter received the information, but it is false, and I think unethical that it was printed.

Letter to the editor

Dear Editor, We live in a great state, and we have a great governor. Unfortunately, Rossi has run a negative, dishonest campaign against Governor Gregoire. When he smears Gregoire, he disrespects everyone who has worked with her to make our state a great place to live, work and raise a family.

Letter to the Editor: More about Moore

Editor, I would like to comment on Pete Porter’s Oct. 6 letter to the editor regarding Brad Weitzel’s Sept. 28 column “No Moore Lies.” Firstly, let me agree in part with Pete (Porter) with his request that statements be retracted.

Letter to the Editor: "Cash for Clunkers" is a Disastrous Program

I disagree with many Editorials which read "Clunkers program has merit, deserves more money." It is a transfer of wealth from taxpayers to people using the program and a transfer of cash towards new cars but away from other goods and services. Not only does it not have any merit, but it is actually disastrous.

Letter to the Editor: Dear Mr. President

This is a copy of an email I sent to President Arevalo in response to his comments in last Sunday's edition of the Spokesman Review in reference to cutting academic programs at EWU in lieu of cutting sports. It is crucial for students to speak out about what they really think is most important at our academic institution.

Letter to Sports Editor: Title IX has flaws

Sports Editor Troy Kirby is partially correct that men and women sports are not equally funded or have equal interest. But, after Title IX’s Education Amendments in 1972, academic institutions funding and participation in athletes is equal. But you cannot put an audience in chains and force women to watch football or men to watch ballet dancing.

Letter to the Editor: EWU students thanked for their courtesy

Dear Editor, I've lived in Cheney for fifteen years and I am a EWU Alumnus. The reason I am writing this letter is to offer a special thanks to the students at EWU. Why the thanks? I am a disabled vet, and can be seen riding around town on my electric scooter, my only means of transport.

Letter to the Sports Editor

Re: Reese Rowdies? No. Team Red!

Reese Rowdies? No. Team Red! To Sports Editor Eric Schwartz and Staff Writer Joel Willits,  I just want to get one thing straight about Team Red. We are not the Reese Rowdies. I'm not trying to bitch, I'm just letting all you newspaper editors know that we are Team Red and not just anyone can be in it either.

Letters to the Editor

An open letter to President Stephen Jordan I strongly protest the termination of Ms. Donna McKereghan. She is a lecturer in philosophy. She has been told that she will no longer be teaching at EWU after spring quarter. She is one of the best teachers here and is widely known to be one of the best.

Letter to the editor: Light hearted humor is appreciated

Dear Editor, This letter is in regards to the April 26 through May 2nd edition of The Easterner, concerning three of the best articles I have seen written in your paper to date. They were all laugh-out-loud funny, very innovative, and above all, entertaining.

Letter to the Editor

I am writing in response to the "Free speech came from war" piece by Brad Weitzel in the Nov. 9-15, 2005 edition of the The Easterner. I am appalled that anyone could associate our freedom of speech with the current war in Iraq. For the sake of "national security" and "protecting our freedoms," we attacked the people of Iraq.

Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor, In response to the letter written to the editor titled “Save the Commandments” as well as the article it addressed, “Thou Shalt Not Whine,” I would like to say that there is a clear distinction between the Ten Commandments being displayed on the front of a government building and a bumper sticker on your car: Separation of Church and State.

Letters to the editor: Greeks are involved in many activities

Dear Editor, Two weeks ago The Easterner contained an article questioning the Greek community's commitment to EWU for not attending a Lady Eags game. Greek Life is full of commitments: intramurals, clubs, ROTC, athletic teams, community service events, philanthropies, tests, WYSIWYG, chapter meetings, athletic events, work- and let's not forget that they are also students.

Letters to the Editor: OSA responds to article

As a representative of the Office of Student Activities (OSA), I would like to respond to comments made in the article "ASEWU to use reserve funds for budget allotments" in the 2/27/08 issue. The OSA strives to serve all EWU students, specifically in this case, all Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) in a holistic and developmental manner.

Letters to the Editor: Cowardly author should keep negativity to self

Dear Editor, Recently there was a publication titled Eastern Voice that made the rounds. The reason I am writing you is that this publication made many over-the-top accusations and slanderous statements about named University employees. My problem is that the author or authors didn't have the guts to put their names on it.

Letters to the Editor

As a reader of the Easterner and an alumnus, I was shocked to see you allow a journalist to “call out” and attack a fellow writer.  In case you did not know, I am referring to Curtis Campbell’s article “Political Oxymorons” in which he makes a direct reference to Dave Imus.

Letter to the Editor: President appreciates student press

I would like to congratulate Editor in Chief Scott Sawyer on the enhanced level of quality he and The Easterner staff are producing this year. The new look of the newspaper is highly professional and demonstrates a commitment to quality journalism. The effort to include more stories that better inform the campus community makes for a paper that is interesting and enjoyable to read.

Letter from the editor

An issue that has been brought up by several people is the inclusion of a second football player (other than Terry Mixon) in the story "EWU football player under investigation" who was questioned by police, but not under investigation. It was the decision of this paper to include that player's name in the story because we felt that it was an important part of the events that transpired.

Letter to the editor: Bailey fired for engaging in free speech

Dear editor, On January 2, 2006, Ms. Ann Bailey, Risk Manager, was fired by Eastern Washington University.  Ms. Bailey was fired because she spoke at a public meeting about a matter of public policy. That may seem shocking to many of you, but for employees of Eastern it is simply another day in paradise.
